1910-1920 The Hawthorne Historic Inn

The Hawthorne Historic Inn, 2121 First Avenue, is one of the oldest buildings in Bankers Hill, located in San Diego's 92101 area. Bankers Hill emerged as a prominent residential neighborhood between 1910 and 1920. Perched on a hill just west of Balboa Park, it earned its name from the wealthy professionals, particularly bankers and other business elites, who settled there. Our street, between Hawthorne and Ivy still has the original building built between 1890 and 1900. During this period, Bankers Hill became synonymous with affluence and sophistication, attracting residents and visitors to the Hawthorne Historic Inn, who sought picturesque views of the bay and proximity to downtown San Diego.

The architecture of Bankers Hill reflected the era's embrace of elegance and style. Many homes built during this decade showcased Craftsman, Mission Revival, and Victorian styles, with some designed by renowned architects such as Irving Gill. These homes were large and opulent, making use of the hilly terrain to offer panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean and the growing city.

The neighborhood’s close proximity to Balboa Park and for visitors to the Santa Fe Depot, became even more significant in 1915, At that time, almost all visitors arrived by train, They flocked toSan Diego when it hosted the Panama-California Exposition. The event brought international attention to the city and helped spur growth in Bankers Hill. The exposition’s Spanish Colonial Revival architecture also influenced some of the homes built during this period. By the end of the 1920s, Bankers Hill had cemented itself as one of San Diego's most prestigious areas.
