And in continuous operation ever since. The Hawthorne was built atop Bankers Hill to catch the cool ocean breezes that it does today. Originally rents were $1.00 to $1.50 a night. And the on site kitchen provided fresh meals daily to its guests. Looking out the window, guests would see hot air balloons launching from the Embarcadero. Horse drawn wagons would pass by in First Avenue which was still just a dirt road. San Diego was a wild town in those days. And Wyatt Earp had his office just a few blocks away on Fifth Avenue. Well, that brings us to about 1903. More later....
